Chris, I was thrilled after the first WBT conference in Vietnam last week, September 14, 2009. It was a WBT successful conference at Tien Giang University. The second one, just took place today at one of the junior high in Mytho City Tien Giang Province Vietnam with about 40 school teachers attended, however; I became a little bit discouraged.
After the introduction to WBT, I proceeded to the video where Chris taught his college students Aristotle's 4 causes using his plastic triangles. After viewing the video, I asked for viewer comments, one of the old teacher stood up and said: "This educational WBT video reflects signs of American mentality's aggressiveness and violence. There is in no way WBT has a single chance of spreading its classroom management here". As a Vietnamese American educator in the U.S eagerly bringing WBT to Vietnam I was totally shocked !
The teacher giving comments, just like me, we both have no collections of the Vietnam War and I and him both were too young to know or remember it, however; I thought the reasons he gave such comment because he read Chris's facial expressions in the video, instead understanding Chris's lecture. He did not understand what Chris was saying in the video. All he saw was Chris and students' gestures and it was like a troop drill or the video is like something that students are in preparation for a battle.
Other comments thereafter were positive.
That was it for now. I will keep you posted with new developments of WBT in Vietnam as I believe the Vietnam education system is in need of being reformed. WBT has come in the country at the right time.
I strongly believe in WBT classroom management and I will not give it up !
I am going to send Jackie a list of attendees who want to have Certificates of Completion. I will update this post with photos taken at the conference.
