Hi, My name is Michael and I am teaching at Sungshin Women's University in Seoul. I have been using some of the power teaching techniques and they have been great. I have used the 'class-yes' which is great for getting the attention of the class. I use the teach-OK and sometimes modifly it for the task at hand i. e. I will say 'Class-yes' to get their attention and then say 'fill in the blanks' (clap) and they will respond 'OK' (clap) or Listen, or Listen and repeat or Work in Pairs or whatever the task is. One of the best techniques is that when you ask a student a question and they don't know the answer or are too embaressed to answer you can you lead the class in 'It's OK' and move on without the class grinding to a halt. I gave the class 5 rules - Follow directions quickly, Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat, Raise your hand for permission to talk, Speak English please, and Keep your dear teacher happy, but for next semester I will take out the 'Raise your hand' rules as they are never needed for the University students. I love to use the 'woo' to encourage them. They seem to think it's silly, but fun. I also give them lots of 'one-second parties' especially after quizzes and at the end of class. I am working on integrating all these more smoothlyinto the lessons, but so far I am pretty happy with the results.
