Hello. I will be teaching fifth grade this year. I want to use the Scoreboard game more effectively. Please give me some suggestions for rewards and points needed to earn those rewards. Thanks.

This is not my idea, but I have seen teachers use it and it looks fun. I teach music, so it wouldn't be practical for me.

What they do is have the students earn each component of something...for instance, a banana split. You could "assemble" the reward object maybe a piece at a time on a bulletin board. So many points would earn the container, so many more, the first scoop of ice cream, etc. until the cherry on top and last the spoon. When all components are earned, they get a "party" with the real thing.

The banana split is just an example....I think you could do it with almost anything that has different "parts".

I use Mind Soccer as a reward. There is a free download that explains the game. I think your fifth graders will enjoy playing it and it is a great tool to use for review. I play it with my third graders and they enjoy every minute of it. I use a variety of questions addressing different standards and concepts. Good luck!

Has anyone tried to download the soccer instructions today? I just get a blank space above the discussion board even though I am logged on. A might moan - I need them.

I have been trying to download for 2 days and I just found a note in the newsletter archive that says the site is too large and will be under construction this week!

I teach music, but I don't know why this couldn't be done in other classes as long as no one objects to hearing music coming out of your room. My kids reward is that they can bring their own CDs to me with one track designated that they want to hear. They have to bring them a day or two before the reward so I can screen them. I used this reward before I did WBT and didn't have to screen because I'd been there long enough that I knew the kids would do the screening. But I am in a new place.

I will rip the chosen song off each CD into a playlist and at the reward time, we will play them. The kids who want to can do karaoke or sing along or dance.

I like the "parts of something" reward, makes it easier on the teacher to not have to reward for every board!

I've only been doing WBT for about 6 weeks, but here are things I've done:

BINGO (using goldfish/cheez-itz for space markers, then they get to eat them when we are done)

Recess time (we don't have scheduled "recess" just organized P.E.

Four Corners

Head Ups 7-Up

Fruit Snacks
