TOPIC: When and how to start power teaching?

When and how to start power teaching? 1 year, 10 months ago #3436

Hi, my name is Stephanie. I am new to Whole Brain Teaching, and I am very excited about using this in my classroom.! I've watched the videos and feel that I have a good understanding of this method. I am a second year teacher, and this is my first year teaching 3rd grade. I am wondering when I can start using this in the classroom? Do I immediately start on the first day of school? How do I approach the students when I begin using power teaching?

Another question? We have a school wide behavior management system for all individual students, whether it be for positive behavior or misbehavior. If a student shows excellent effort or positive behavior, we can give the student a "loop", which is like a wristband. The students can turn in the "loops" for rewards. If the student misbehaves, breaks the class rules/expectations, then the student will recieve a color change (miss minutes off recess). Additional color changes can result in additional minutes off recess , going to the office, or going to the principal's office. I would like to know how I can use both the scoreboard and our school behavior management system at the same time, and when is it necessary to use each one? Thanks so much!!!

Sincerely,
Stephanie

I also have a school wide color system that must be used for behavior and I actually was able to maybe solve this dilemma as well. I am working on the particulars and hope to have pictures and such posted before long....I have another post on here that kinda explains what I am doing in the KINDERGARTEN section....titled "BY GOLLY IT MIGHT JUST WORK" or something like that! LOL!

Hi Stephanie!
Yes! Absolutely start the first day! When I taught 3rd grade, I taught the Big Six (there was no "hands and eyes" back then, so there was only 6 instead of 7) right away. I could get through the Class! Yes!, Scoreboard, the classroom rules, the teach okay!, in addition to the 3peats (lines, lines, lines: seats, seats, seats; Open books to!). We would review the next day and add in the mirrors and the switch. Going through the Big Seven is Level 1 and it should get you through the first month or two of school before you need to move up levels:)

As far as management technique~ the Scoreboard is used as a whole class motivator. You will need to use this to ping pong students back and forth to get them motivated when you are introducing the rules and routines. Be sure to check out the "getting started" videos, if you haven't already! This will help you with your first steps.

As far as the color card system goes, Farrah posted a great description for making WBT fit with that she described to you below. Were you able to find it?

Hope this helps:)
