TOPIC: Wow, what a conference

Wow, what a conference 1 year, 6 months ago #4264

It was energy all the way, and the presenters kept us on our toes. I really enjoyed seeing everyone I have communicated with and received so much help from, bless you all!

My notes are so scrambled though I am not sure where I am to put the I say, I do, I learn? What were the gestures and did this come after rule #5?

Can't wait to use my buttons. And... what word do I use to get the kids to wait for me to make my score board mark till the Oh yeha or groan? Again THANKS EVERYONE!

Annette,
It was good to meet you! I think one of the phrases you are referring to is when Andrea taught us how she interacts with her Kinders on Rule 5.
T: Rule 5
ST: Keep your dear teacher happy
T: And what keeps me happy?
ST: When I learn! I need to say it, and do it, to learn it!
(Gestures were hand by mouth as if you were speaking, roll hands in front like you are busy, and touch your head to indicate learning).

As for the scoreboard, just ask your students to "hold it" until you point to them. That way you can have the "Oh Yeah" all together.

Have fun!

I really wish I could have made the conference!! I'm sure it was amazing as always. I like how after we say rule number 5, we should ask students how they can make us happy. I am going to teach that to my students. What a great way for them to know what they are responsible for!! !

I did exactly that after I read Deb's post. It was kind of amazing how fast the kids picked up on the words and actions and how they all were saying it in unison:) What a powerful statement!!!! Thanks for sharing!!

Hi ladies! Glad that was a helpful addition to Rule#5~ just please don't forget that rule #5 is: KEEP your dear teacher happy:)! (as opposed to "make" your dear teacher happy. I let my students know that they don't need to make me happy~ everyday that I come to teach them I am happy to be there and to be their teacher. They just need to keep me as happy as I am at the beginning of the day by doing their best to learn and to allow others around them to learn!)

Re: Wow, what a conference 1 year, 5 months ago #4440

Today i finally was able to catch a parent who never showed up to her daughter's conference (first time in 9 years I've ever just had someone not come. My principal is pretty insistent that we meet with all parents~ so we jump through hoops. However, this one joined my class just 3 weeks before conferences with no good address or number). The parent had been really inconsistent in helping her daughter with homework, despite the notes going home. When I brought the mom in and started showing her how behind she was all the homework that was missing, the little girl got up and said "Look mommy, I've got a card in my pocket!" She brought it over and said "See, Keep your dear teacher happy." And I said, yes ____, how do you keep your teacher happy?" And she said "I've got to learn!" I said "that's right!" & then I asked her what helps her to learn and she said "When I do my homework." Then she told her mom how she wanted to get her homework done. I am not sure this will get through~ but i know it made an impression on her. I was just impressed that the little girl was able to tell her mom how important getting her homework done is:)!

The gesture I use for Rule #5 "Keep your dear teacher happy!" is when you make L shapes with your fingers and frame your face and with your biggest, warmest, smile, say it!

I wore #5 button to school today and one of my most challenging students walked up to me and asked me what my button said. She then read it and did the gesture!

I REALLY loved the response of what makes "dear teacher" most happy: seeing her/his students LEARN and TEACH their learning to one another! I will be sharing this with my class Monday!

Thank you all for sharing!

The gesture I use for Rule #5 is making two L shapes with my thumb and pointer fingers, framing my face, and with my biggest smile, saying, "Keep your dear teacher happy!"

I wore Rule #5 button to school today and one of my most challenging students (usually lots of eye rolling and other guffs) walked up to me and asked me what my button said. She then read it and did the gesture and saying!
