TOPIC: "Work quiet"

"Work quiet" 1 year, 1 month ago #5262

My all day kinders tend to go down hill after lunch, and that's when I teach math. I have fooled around with my schedule a little bit (calendar AFTER our math lesson and paper) but they're still a bit chatty. I understand the need/desire to talk during seat work, but not at the expense of wasted intruction time. So a few days ago I tried something out of the blue. I used the same call response as Teach/Okay (which I haven't even introduced to my kids yet) with the two claps first then I said "work quiet" and they clapped and said "work quiet". We had to practice a few times b/c some kids wanted to say "work quiet" AS they were clapping. Once they got it though, they began their work with little chatter. Music to my ears at the end of a day. =)

Megan,

As Andrea points out, adapting the WBT teach okay works in many areas. Clap Clap Read!, OK!, clap clap Work (Compute), OK! (for doing a math problem). Draw; Debate; Practice...

I think it is worth noting that not only do your little ones have trouble with the idea of waiting until after they have clapped to say OK (work quiet), when I am working with adult teachers they have the same issue. It always gets a lot of giggles when they mess it up - a point I am delighted with as I point out how much fun they are having in WBT training. Then I connect it to their students pointing out the students will also have fun with it.

Hey to add to Jason's comments~ some of the things we have been doing is in connection with our reading strategies, for example:

Clap, clap: PRedict!

Clap, clap: Summarize!

Clap, clap: Evaluate!

You get the idea:)!
