TOPIC: Substitute using WBT

Substitute using WBT 1 year ago #5670

Today I substituted for a kindergarten class. The morning was very rough until I remembered what I have learned through this website. The children loved Class Yes. I was asked to return to sub for this class on Friday and can't wait to implement the other concepts and ideas. Can anyone give me some advice on how to continue to use WBT as a substitute?

Thank you

Subbing in Kinder I would definitely continue with class-yes, and also teach them "hands and eyes". You may need to use hands and eyes 20 times a day as a sub in Kinder! The scoreboard is very simple as well, and I believe that the Kinders would be extremely motivated to earn smilies!

This is my" Cheat Sheet" for subs:
Whole Brain Teaching

Quick Reference

Class Rules:

1. Follow directions quickly.
2. Raise your hand for permission to speak.
3. Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat.
4. Make smart choices.
5. Keep your dear teacher happy.
(Have the class practice the rules at the beginning of the day.  Rules are posted on board.  Refer to these to remind students as needed.)

To get the students attention say “Class” they will reply with “yes”.  If this does not work or you need more focused attention say “Hands and Eyes” then wait for everyone to repeat, fold hands, and look at you.  Use these techniques anytime you want the students’ attention.

When you want them to partner say, “Teach” and they will respond with “OK”.

When you are teaching, use gestures, and say “Mirror”. The students will mirror your gestures. Gestures help the students remember the concepts.

Scoreboard: Draw a T Chart on the board, with a smiley face on one side and a frownie face on the other. This will serve as your scoreboard throughout the day.  When class is going well award a smiley  (Mighty Oh Yeah!).  When rules are not being followed or things are not going well give a frownie  (Mighty Groan).  Keep the difference within 3 points to keep the interest level high and keep the students motivated. At the end of the day, if the smileys win, play a 1 minute game.  If the frownies win, there is no game-time. (You may divide the day in ½, and give a reward at lunchtime, such as going to lunch 1 minute early, or 1 minute of free whiteboard writing/drawing.) If you do this, start a new scoreboard in the afternoon. Remember to use the scoreboard often throughout the day, or they will think you forgot and the scoreboard will lose its effectiveness.

The students can help you with the procedures. Above all, have fun!!!

Let us know how it goes!

I am huge fan of gestures! When you go into a classroom and set up class/yes, hands and eyes, scoreboard and gestures.....you are sure to have them alive and kicking the whole day. They will have a blast doing everything with you.
Good luck and make it happen.

I totally agree with the other responses~ and Deb~ what a GREAT detailed explanation!!!

The cool thing about WBT is that you don't really "need" anything~ except for a white board (for the scoreboard) or if you don't have that you can even tape up a piece of paper and use a marker.

BUT~ you may want to make a poster up that has the pictures of the rules for reference. That way when you correct behavior (for example, a student calls out in class, you say "Rule 2" and the students say "RAise your hand for permission to speak!") the students will know the rule that you are talking about.

Lastly~ WHERE ARE YOU SUBBING???? I NEED YOU!!!! !!!

Re: Substitute using WBT 12 months ago #5825

Thank you so much everyone for the great responses! I have been successful in every class K-7th that I have subbed at in sunny Fallbrook California except one, but later learned it was the teacher's issue because she had not implemented any type of classroom management program into the class so they were bonkers! I love the idea of the poster. So far I have been returning to classrooms at the request of teachers and have found the kids remember it all!!! The teachers later ask me what I am doing and I have even had the principal at one school take notice!

Again thank you so much and I plan to update this thread with my substitute WBT experiences when they occur I am looking for a WBT teacher to come observe in the area so if anyone knows of one please let me know!

You can certainly count on me if you need, I am local. Wish you could sub in my classroom. I'd love to know I have a WBT expert taking over when I am gone.

Annette,
Where do you teach? I would love to come observe you in action! I think you learn so much from watching someone as opposed to just reading about it. I am up in North County.

Holly,

I am by far no expert, though I do use WBT all day. Maybe we could put both our heads together and see what things can be worked on to assist you and I. The elementary school where I am located is in San Diego. I can give you my E mail address and we can connect on line if you are still interested.
