I recently had a discussion with one of my student teachers that was looking at implementing WBT into her classroom. She understood all of the steps, as it is clearly played out in scenarios and steps in all of the materials. Her concern was following the Houghton and Mifflin pacing plan and using the power pix because it is terribly overwhelming when following the expository texts . I suggested that she try to stay clear of all the crazy suggestions that HM offers and reference the standards being taught that week instead. Then.. teach the standards using the power oics and the WBT classroom model download. I really enjoyed the way everything is clearly played out for you! You can just envision an entire classroom thriving to the beat of WBT!!

h.hansen...the advice that you gave is great...I concur, the only problem that may arise is the fact that you mentioned she is a student teacher, or new teacher, and she will be under the microscope a little more than you or I. She needs to understand the part about balance and using her HM curriculum, but boosting it up with WBT.

This can be done by following the 5-Step lesson planner in the Model classroom download. It sounds like you are using that, so maybe share that with her also.

Power to the Teacher!

Absolutely Chris!
unfortunately,
a few schools within in our district have fallen into the PI bracket creating swarms of fear! HM is mandated. I think the thing that concerned her the most is her administrator wanted a copy of her lesson plans with all of the standards she was teaching documented, copied, and turned into him at the beginning of the week. The WBT model classroom has been a savior for both the struggling beginning teacher and the tenured veteran. I love the way its organized and fits right into HM curriculum. The only extra work incorporated is making sure the standards being taught are aligned with our quarterly benchmarks.

Love, Love, Love, WBT!!!
