TOPIC: Songs for teaching elementary students

Songs for teaching elementary students 3 years, 1 month ago #773

I enjoyed the phonics/alphabet song on the kindergarten video clip. Songs seem like a great way to reinforce Whole Brain Teaching! Have any of you come across an effective CD or DVD that I could purchase, which has songs to teach various subjects to first graders or lower elementary students? Thanks.

Hello!
I use music everyday in my classroom (now in 2nd and last 4 years in Kindergarten). I can suggest the following artists that I use and you can usually find at Lakeshore or buy them online:
Dr. Jean
Jack Hartamann
Hap Palmer
Greg and Steve

Dr. Jean and Jack Hartmann have a huge range of academic as well as management songs that are a God send at times. If you have something specific that you want let me know, I will see if I can find the resources for you.
Have fun!

Thanks for the information, Heather. I will check out the artists you listed. I also recently came across another good singer named Heidi who creates DVDs of teaching songs with gestures and choreography for K-2. Her website is heidisongs.com

There are short songs, all free to download without registration at www.etseverywhere.com, which is my site. No money in it for me. I'm not sure if the songs will be useful. They are for EFL/ESL students, but there must be 50 or more. --Kevin

Clicking on the link didn't work for me either, but I tried typing in the web address and got in.
I typed in www.etseverywhere.com
I thought it was a neat website, with songs that could be used for ELL or lower elementary.

Another good music talent for teaching those little ones is Donna Whyte. She also has some great books that have chants, motions, etc. that accompany her music.

I am a music teacher, so this is "up my alley". I highly recommend this resource:

www.musick8.com/

They put out magazines and CDs every two month that music teachers subscribe to. But they also aggregate songs into CDs around specific themes that are sold individually. There are also tons of free resources there for music teachers. Their songs are so appealing to all ages (including middle age like me, LOL!) and they have some that I love to use for character education. For example, one of my favorites is "Motivated" and I love "Growing Up" (means doing things you don't wanta do sometimes). I don't think you can download single songs, but you can listen to excerpts and get the CD that has those songs or whatever, I think.

Another thing they offer is a site just for kids. There are usually some freebies (for KIDS ONLY-not kosher for teachers to get them) on there and parents can put an "allowance" there for a child to download songs he/she chooses for 99 cents each. I like that it teaches budgeting as well as music.

Here is the kids' site:
