TOPIC: lesson plans

lesson plans 8 months, 2 weeks ago #8071

I am so overwhelmed with lesson plans, lesson plans, lesson plans right now. Our district has us GANAG'ing all our plans and it is difficult for me when I implement WBT. My question is: How do write my plans to include WBT techniques? G=stating common core standards and I can statements (not a problem), A=Accessing Prior Knowledge (I use WBT here some), N=New Information-both declarative and procedural (I definitely use WBT here, consistently), A=apply, analyze (and I use it here), G=revisit the Goal (here you list your Questioning and Thinking techniques). This is a short overview of the LONG format we are using. It is much more detailed. I just thought someone on here could lend me some ideas.
Thanks,
Linda

I am no help at all but would libe an aswer as well. I am really struggling with planning. Trying to follow the overwhelming curriculum books and incorporate WBT is just not going well for me either. This week just kinda used the books and work sheets then throw in WBT stuff and it was not so successful. Not sure what to do. WS just stink but that is all we r provided and I am still so new. Hope someone can give some advice. Thinking of abandoning the district curriculum and just focus on standards and ideas and plan from there but it might be to much work for one person to do. Good luck to you.

Well, no advice here, but I just wanted to say that I am in the same boat. We just had a staff meeting last week and they introduced our new district lesson plan template. These go with our new GLAD strategies that we have to do, too. It is difficult to do and hard to get a good focus. At least, I do feel that the WBT is the best and easiest part to implement, but it is SO HARD to make it all work and do everything I'm supposed to do and want to do, all at once. Good luck you guys and hopefully we can all get the hang of everything soon. I hate spending all night working on lesson plans........ ay ay ay...... I had my best day of planning today, so at least that's good. I think I have a new system worked out. I'll be interested to see what someone says in response to your questions.

Teachr4l, I would live to hear your new plan. I don't have one yet and right now I don't like what I am doing. I hate having the kids do boring ineffective worksheets and stuff but that is most of the resources I get and with the testing I have to do coming from the info from the worksheets it almost makes teachers use them. Ahhhhh I'm hoping soon I will figure this out. I am already so tired. Working over 12 hour days to judpst get things figured out and then feel like it stinks anyway. Well I guess I can only do the best I can at the moment and hope I improve. I may give my self a super improvers card .

Hi Okigirl!
I understand what you are saying about too much curriculum! However, I know that my district is very strict, with respect to "Fidelity to the Core" To ensure that I use my curriculum,I look at the objectives and standards being focused on in the story. We incorporate variations of Crazy Professor, while reading the story, and we then focus on writing and grammar. Here is a template of my day:
Morning: Power Pic wall (5 min), LA Prove it(10 min),SS 1000(1 min), weekly story(30 min) 5 step grammar (30 min), or genre writing
Mid Morning:Power pic wall, Math Prove It, 5 step lesson on a section on the chapter, critical thinking or independent work
After Lunch: Universal Access, I work with my ELL students using the curriculum. For example, the re teach section is wonderful. You provide small group instruction and other students can work independently. It always aligns with the skill I taught during the day or a previous skill.

Finally, SS or Science, 5 step lesson and lots of oral writing and or summative writing. Always watch for Super Improvers with respect to each students homework....HTH! I know your times and subjects will not mirror mine. However, I thought it might be helpful for you to see how a day goes with me.

Students always speak in complete sentences when answering:cheer:

I need to copy this if I may. My principal was just asking for schedules and I could not wrap my head around how to show use of WBT and district curriculum. Great job.

Thank you so much Heather! Ten finger woo to you. It was very helpful. I was just thinking and Looking over our standards and if I could pull from there and maybe not use all the curriculum provided as long as I am covering the standards. Then my instruction would not have to be so by the text book and just reading and work sheets. Not sure what I would do about assessments.
On a side note today we had a really good and fun WBT lesson on sentence types. Kids really liked it. Did more oral writing and genius ladder too. So maybe I'm heading in the right direction. Thanks again for your schedule. M

Heather, I really liked seeing how you break up and schedule your day. Thanks for sharing! It is very helpful to see how others do it. When you said 5 step lesson, are you talking about the WBT lesson plan template? Thanks!
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, Oki Girl, here is my schedule:

*When I say GLAD strategy, I am talking about posters/charts/chants, etc. that is part of our DISTRICT requirements.*

ELA:
20 min. silent reading
10 min. vocab (GLAD strategy CCD chart with gestures)
5 min. spelling rule and practice (T/TH) and superspeed 1000 (MWF)
35 min. reading comprehension (GLAD strategies, WBT-crazy professor) use weekly story or social studies tie in.
20 min. Power Pix/Standards lesson/grammar
15 min. Oral writing, genius ladder, real writing (on paper : ) practice (summary/response to lit/narrative)
15 min. Prove It!

(RECESS)

MATH:
15 min. Prove It!
15 min. Power pix standard/Cornell Notes/examples/whole class direct instruction
15 min. guided practice, groups, then partners
10 min. independent work, problems from book
10 min. closure/wrap up/power pix review standard

ELD:
Lots of oral writing and genius ladder. That moves into writing good sentences, paragraphs, and proper transitions and sequencing. I LOVE using the WBT strategies during this time with my BEGINNER Language Development class. The writing aspects of WBT have been SOOO effective!

Lunch
Agendas
Music (When music ends after the 1st quarter, I will be able to teach Science in the afternoon. I will make Power Pix for 5th grade Science standards that go with 4th grade. 5th grade is when they take the Science CST, so I prepare them for that during 4th grade.

Bria,
There is a model of the WBT lesson plan in the Model Classroom 2.0 book on the free ebooks. That might help you until Tuesday when Coach B goes over it on the Live Chat. There are several good examples in the Model Classroom book. I think using the 5 step lesson format along with the Power Pix should cover most anything that you would be required to do. The Power Pix are charts with the standard listed and a gesture provided. After one is taught, it goes on the wall and becomes a review. You seem to have that in place, so I would think you could definitely show how you are fulfilling the district requirements.

Keep up the great job you're doing.

Thanks! I know I have seen it, but I have not set up my plans that way as of yet, since I am working on so many things at once! I have had to prioritize : ) I can't wait until Tuesday to hear it straight from Coach B. I will probably read and review the 5 step lesson plan before then, since I can't wait and the timing is perfect for me. I can't wait to wrap my brain around it and get all my lessons in the WBT format AND mesh it with my district/GLAD requirements. Thanks for the encouragement, I hope it will just flow!
