How are teachers responding to those students who go a bit overboard during the "Class - Yes" response and other teacher cues. For example, I can see some of my more challenging students deciding to get attention by continuing to say "Oh yeah!" or "Classity, classity" ad nauseum after everyone else has stopped. Is this a situation for rule 5, Keep your dear teacher happy? Any comments from those of you who've dealt with this one?

I respond with the scoreboard....."Oh that's a grumpy teacher point. It looks like we need to practice some more how to respond." Then we practice about 4-5 more times. The first 2-3 times the class "clowns" continue to do their hamming it up and I continue to give myself a grumpy teacher point. After that, the peer pressure turns on them and you'll get the rest of the class going "Joooohhhhnnnnyy....please do it right!" Then I make sure we practice it right 2-4 times to get the smiley student points and get the scoreboard back in balance. Whenever the class "clown" decides to do this again, we do the same routine all over again. It works, but you have to work the scoreboard!

I have experienced this scoreboard situation. You can practice, as suggested, but it needs to be done right then or as soon after the infraction as possible. I have also used the class clowns as my wrong way models, not when they are doing it but at another time. When done this way they get an audience and time to strut their stuff.
