I teach 9th grade English and English Honors and I have been loving the joys if WBT. However, I am bored of the "what to play for " ideas. The following list works like magic for me:

1. Minutes in the bank for Friday free time.
2. H/w assignments modified (less for a win)
3. Extra credit points
4. Moving a due date (this was a HUGE motivator for one class who all take lots of AP classes, so ANY respite from work was welcomed!)

Haven't tried these, but I think they might work (let me know if you know otherwise!):

6. Being allowed to work with their MP3 players out.
7. Sitting wherever they like for one class.

Any more suggestions please.....

Have you tried any of the games, Mind Soccer or Beach Ball Baffler? My students are 7th graders - they enjoy banking time to play these on Firday. I switch between these and another vocabulary game they love to play.

I also give weekly quizzes, and so sometimes I let them play for team quiz/individual quiz. They looove to play for the chance to work with their group on a quiz.

Thanks for those suggestions. I am getting ready to play Mind Soccer for the first time next week. I know the key is to be completely in control, but the truth is I am nervous about getting the game right myself! The beautiful thing is, "the ref is always right"! so if I mess up that little caveat will save me...

I "commissioned" an art student to make the soccer table for me and I hope to film it and post it on the site.
