Well a few weeks ago I told Angela that I had a "Miguel" moment and thought of her! For those that have herd here Rule #5 Miguel story...you know that it is the ultimate tale of how Rule #5 is the best rule!!! Angela told me to post it so here it is!
So....here is my moment...
I teach kindergarten in Charter School here in Texas. So...we had been studying about hibernation in our language unit. The story we had been reading talked about different animals and bugs that "hibernate" during the winter. The kids were especially fascinated by the fact that there are not really any bugs around in the winter. So....we were talking about our favorite animals...and one of my kinders asked me what my favorite bug was. I firmly let him know that I "HATED BUGS"....I told them that I just couldn't stand creepy crawlies and they freaked me out...especially SPIDERS!!!!
Well a few days went by and there wasn't really any more discussion about our conversation or my dislike of bugs. One of my little boys is well...not my most difficult student but is definitely a challenge on some days. We had a particularly difficult day and when I dismissed class that day he was definitely not happy with me. I hate to send my students home in a bad mood but there was just no fixing his attitude that day...so I thought it best to leave it alone and start over the next day.
Well I came into my classroom the next morning and on my desk was a paper towel with a note from this kinder (drawn in his best handwriting) that said "I LOVE YOU Miss Shipley" I am thinking awe how sweet (cuz he has his moments). Little did I know when I opened the paper towel what I would find. There was an array of bugs from a dead fly, to a dead cockroach, to some other dead creature with quite a few legs. Needless to say I was scared out of my skin and dropped the paper towel to which my entire class roared with laughter. After catching my breath I asked said student what made him think that it was ok to bring bugs into the classroom...especially when we had discussed the fact that I didn't like bugs...well that just broke his heart!!! He said "mrs. shipley I just wanted you to see that they won't hurt you!"
Oh I felt like a total loser!!! LOL! So we quickly refreshed our memories on RULE #5...which we add the "what keeps me happy? When we learn!" This little boy raise his hand and said.."Mrs shipley we did learn...we learned that you really don't like bugs!!"
Oh yeah I was just fighting a lost cause. I asked him if he though I was happy right that moment...he agreed I wasn't and that because I wasn't happy he had broken rule #5.
Now...I honestly don't know if he did it on purpose or what but I do know that my class figured out really quick how important it was to KEEP YOUR DEAR TEACHER HAPPY!!!
