The key, for you, is to understand that the Scoreboard game is fixed and that it operates in graduated levels. Initially, if only one or two students are misbehaving, the most the class as a whole should receive is one page extra homework (and that should be infrequent ... just enough so that everyone understands you are serious). Keep bouncing your class back and forth between Smiley and Sad Faces, never letting either score exceed the other by 3 points ... it is this movement back and forth that changes behavior more than a final penalty. Then, as necessary move on to (in this order) the Guff Counter the Independents, the Bullseye Game. If you're teaching elementary school, you can address invidual behavior problems with the card practice system ... or for middle school/ high school with Power Detention.
