I want to change up how I teach vocab. I intro ten words on Monday, use the teach/okay here and there, and then the kids practice using a worksheet. They have other activities during the week to reinforce and review. Any ideas? I know of vocab candy but can't see it in my head for introducing the words on the first day.

Some Thoughts: I guess it would depend on how 'deeply' you want them to understand the vocabulary terms.
-You could create gestures for the words with the students or have them create their own gestures.
-Also,after have them work on teach/okay....you can play a game where each kids gives an example or uses the word in a sentence.
Good Luck!

I second Jay's recommendation about gestures. I began using gestures to help define the words this year. It really has helped them remember the words and their meanings.

Try introducing five on Monday, then on Tuesday first review the five you taught, adn then add the next five. I think you will find this helpful.

I was in the same predicament and, like the other posters, started using gestures and reviewing multiple times during the day. Our principal also presented us with a vocabulary card based on different researchers recommendations for teaching vocabulary.

I am attaching a copy of the Vocabulary card & tree map we use. (Ok, I can't figure out how to add attachments, I will play with it and attach them this afternoon)

Tiffany,

I'm always interested in new and better ways to introduce vocabulary. I would love a copy of the vocabulary card and tree map you were referring to. I post all vocabulary words on a poster divided into boxes in ABC order. Every morning we read the words with gestures and incorporate voc candy. The "reader leader" leads the class in this activity and picks 5 words for the class to use in a sentence.
