TOPIC: Using WBT with Substitute Teaching

Using WBT with Substitute Teaching 3 years, 2 months ago #548

I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to use Whole Brain Teaching as a substitute teacher?

I have talked with several subs who have used this effectively.

I suggest teaching class-yes! and the Scoreboard Game right away. The Five Rules are also used by several.

Teach-OK is also good, depending on the situation, and what work is left behind by the teacher you are subbing for.

I definitely want to encourage you to try this, and let us know how it goes here.

I have been using Whole Brain Teaching when I substitute for the last couple of weeks! I have to say I Love it!!! I can't believe how quickly the students learn Class-Yes. I have used Teach-OK a few times and still need some practice. But I love the structure of the program, and how engaged the students are. Students are loving the Scoreboard and I love hearing them say "Oh Yah", or even the Mighty Groans are great at enforcing what the expectations are. I was in a class a few months ago and didn't use WBT and then went back yesterday and used WBT. It was a totally different class!! I had an assistant in who could not believe the difference. I have been spreading the word to the permanent teachers and they are really excited about learning more. I believe WBT gives you a confidence in your teaching that no other system or idea can do! Thanks for all the information.......I can't wait to learn more!

WBT works great for subs. The great thing about being a sub is every day is a "new year". I used WBT as a sub in all grades. Start small with CLASS/YES and the scoreboard game. Play for "early release". You won't really let them out early, but you can get them moving towards the door early or late as the case may be!

What if there is already a system in place? Once, a teacher had a sticker system in place, but it was terrible!! They did not care if a sticker was taken and they expected me to give them 1 when THEY acknowledged their good behavior. "I'm doing my work, can I have a sticker?" They said the regular teacher would give them 1. I still did not! I wanted to try wbt but I didn't want the assistants to be offended. This was an ec class and there were 2 assistants present. I am pretty young with a hs math background and I didn't want them to think I thought I knew more than they did about teaching a 3rd grade ec class... What do you do when a management system is already in place?
