TOPIC: Mighty oh yeah alternatives

Mighty oh yeah alternatives 6 months, 2 weeks ago #8997

Hi, I'm new here so please forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere. I will search when I get a few minutes of down time...Ha!

I was wondering if there was a list of different responses for the / .
I've used "who rocks?" and the kids reply, "We Rock!!" and "Candy store" to which they reply "sweet!" But those are getting kind of old.

Re: Mighty oh yeah alternatives 6 months, 2 weeks ago #8999

It has been discussed, BUT we always think of something new. I would do a search under gestures, but ask away...we love new stuff. I like your candy idea. Let's see for Thanksgiving there is gooble, hip hooray turkey day and so on. I know we will all help you. By the way what age do you work with that will make a difference kinda.
Annette.

I work with third graders this year, but I had first last year. I started using Powerteaching two years ago and was hooked. I've also used, "pirate/Argh" and "Santa/Ho ho ho". But this year I'm coming up with blanks.

Here are some Mighty Oh Yeah/Groan Alternatives:

Booyah! Boo!

Smooth! Rocky!

Cha-ching! Oh snap!

Bazinga! No points for you!

Bam!! More butter!

Bingo! Fiddlesticks!

Yum Turkey! Oh my pumpkin pie!

Treasure! Walk the plank!

Superfly! That's Wack!

Ho, ho, ho! No presents for you!

Right on! Not cool!

Fantastic, Bubble Plastic! Oh rats!!

It always helps if you are feeling it and the class is too. Have them brainstorm some ideas and pick the one they seem most into. Any other ideas?

Mighty Oh Yeahs:

Pirate style- cover right eye, make left index finger into a hook "Arrrr!"

Surfer Style- Wave hands with thumb and little finger out- "Righteous, Dude!" or "Gnarly, Dude!"

Touchdown- Throw both hands straight up enthusiastically- "Touchdown!"

Basketball- Mime a jump shot- "Nothing but net!"

Nemo style- Clap hands, throw hands up- "Sharkbait! HuHaHa!"

Silent Wow- This one is silent- mime a clap throw hand up on either side of your face, three fingers up on each hand, while you make an O with your mouth. You have made a WOW.

Sparkles- Give a clap and an oh yeah, and snap your fingers several times while waving your arms around.

Fireworls- Clap, bring hands over your head, and as you clap again say "Bang!" then hiss and wave your fingers as your slowly lower your hands. That is the sizzle of the fireworks.

Love, love love these new ones see I knew we all had a pocket full of ideas...bazinga!
Also the up side downscoreboard was not a one time fluke it worked 2 days in a row with much more enthusrasm than the day before. They are now working as a team and correcting each other for scoreboard points oh yeah took 42 days.

Here are some mighty groan alternatives to spice it up as well:

Bayou style: "Ahhhh! Maw foot is stuck in a gator!"

Pothole style: "Did I do that?!" (from the popular commercial where a pothole punctures a Porshe tire)

Nemo style: "Ah! You made me ink!"

Surfer Style: "Bummer dude!"

Pirate style: "Walk the plank!"

Humpty dumpty: "Aiiiieeeee, splat!"

These are some really great ideas. In my classroom, sometimes we forget that we changed things up and I still get "Oh Yeah!" , but they laugh and change it. For the holidays I am using Bahumbug/Jingle Bells. We also give ten finger Ho, ho, ho's. I am thinking for those exceptional responses: ten finger ho, ho, ho with a bowl full of jelly laugh!

Hello!

These are all great alternatives to the Mighty Oh-Yeah/Mighty Groan! Another way to get my kids excited about the scoreboard is I have an alternating board rotation list and each of my students get to draw the scoreboard on the board for the day. They get to choose the color, style, pics, and the saying for the day! They LOVE it!!!!

Thanks,

That is a great idea! The kids definitely buy in even more when they have some ownership in setting it up. This could also be an alternative that you could introduce when their enthusiasm begins to flag.

Re: Mighty oh yeah alternatives 5 months, 3 weeks ago #9188

Laura and Jeff, I can't agree more student buy in is crucial and when you add the "fun" ingredient as Laura has it is a beautiful feeling.
Thank you for sharing.

Our favorite one we've ever used happened this week. Spongebob themed-- "I'm ready!" for the smileys (although we used the Oh Yeah mixed in) and "TARTAR SAUCE" for a frowny.

Re: Mighty oh yeah alternatives 5 months, 1 week ago #9244

I have added, "are we ready " when we count the smiles on the scoreboard.
