TOPIC: Hook the School Board

Hook the School Board 6 months, 2 weeks ago #9049

At Walsh University in NE Ohio, WBT is taking a solid foothold. While it is part of my graduate classes, most of my graduate students have attempted to implement WBT in one manner or another.

Monday, two teachers who are also graduate students at Walsh, presented WBT to their school board. In bold WBT action, Lindsey and Candace used a small group of third graders to lead the Class-Yes, and teach-okay. The students used WBT to teach the board members and audience parts of the brain. As a former school superintendent, I thought their idea was brilliant. They reported that the board loved it and had fun learning with the students. That is a great hook!

Yesterday, the reporter who covered the school board meeting referenced the teachers and students who had presented Whole Brain Teaching. He also wrote that he visited the WBT website and quoted a few things about WBT. This is good stuff that will lead to more interest. I understand that a local Youngstown television station has been contacted about doing a human interest piece on how WBT has impacted the 3rd grade at this rural Ohio school.

David, that is so exciting to hear! The impact of WBT is being measured daily in many classrooms around the world. Your comments bring to light again how true that is! Go, Ohio!!

David,

Having the students teach the adults WBT makes for an interesting lesson. Recently, our Fifth Grade Team and students hosted a Family Literacy Project. The first item on the agenda was to have the 5th graders use their leadership skills and WBT strategies to introduce their parents to a day in the classroom at our school. The parents were delighted, amused, and learned a lot. Comments were I didn't do anything like this when I was in school, how fun, no wonder my child comes home and says they love school, and I am so thankful that I don't have to argue with my child this year to get them to go to school. Former students who have moved on to middle school this year, come back and share that they learned so much using WBT and really miss it this year, as the WBT movement has not made its way to the middle school!

Any time you can have the students show the school board the best practices in place and the teachers and administrators can follow up with the data, it is a win-win partnership!

Thanks for sharing,

David this a great story! You need to organize a conference there in Ohio at Walsh...say, this summer? Let us know.

We are pretty excited by eight action research projects currently being completed by teachers working on their Master's degree at Walsh University. The impact of Whole Brain Teaching was the research topic for each of the teachers. Two of the students are working with me to compile the data and artifacts from each of the studies to combine into one composite.

The results have been as many of you would have predicted: significant academic gains. We believe that objective research data will help us to promote WBT with schools specifically in Northeast Ohio and generally everywhere. School Boards (the original topic of this forum) love to be able to point to facts when reporting to their communities. We want to give them those kind of facts and data regarding the incredible benefits of Whole Brain Teaching.

I will be updating some of the results in my blog at drbroactivelearning.wordpress.com/ over the coming weeks.

So exciting to read about your students and look forward to hearing about their results. Your Blog is great! I am forwarding it to my Superintendent, who set our district up on a two year contract with Coach Biffle and his WBT staff. We are so fortunate to have educators like yourself that stay on the cutting edge of education!

My principal and assistant principal have observed my classes using WBT several times. The principal asked me to have my class and I demonstrate how we use WBT to our Board of Education. We did that (the kids loved it!) and have had only great comments as a result. How lucky we are to know,do, and show others Whole Brain Teaching! Woo-Hoo!

This is so great to hear from all of you. I just love the positive effects of WBT around the world. Now if only I can get more people on board in my district. I am still looked upon as having 2 heads. LOL. I just keep plugging away at it though.
