OH YEAH Variations..GO! 1 year, 2 months ago #4935

Anyone got a list of oh yeahs and Groans they like to use with elementary students?

I have gathered a few, but wondering if you all have anymore?

Thanks in advance!

My third graders like to say, "Oh Man" when I get a point. We haven't really changed up our celebration. I somewhat recall reading on a different post someone using a "Booyah," but I'm not sure if that was for the scoreboard.

Are you just asking about different ways to have your 1 second party or different things to use for the scoreboard itself?

I've used some other scoreboard options, like a whole heart and broken heart drawn for February. Three leaf clover and a four leaf clover drawn for March...things like that would also change up the scoreboard.

Since St. Patrick's Day is this month, my students decided to say, "So lucky!" for our Smilies, and "No gold!" for our frownies. We like to change it up. Just keep it simple, as they will be saying it over and over.

My kids loved when I used Candyland for the happy face side, and Dooms Day for the sad face side.

I'd say, get ready to eat your candy. When I put the point on the candyland side, they would rub their tummies and shout out "Yum."

I have contemplated adding a chance to learn vocabulary words for my first graders, such as give me a dreadful groan, or a glorious oh yea. But I would need to have a list of about 5 for each that I could cycle through to keep it fresh and exciting. I'd post it small for me to see by the scoreboard. I just need to do it! spring break!

On a very special day, I used 1 point = 100 points which made it seem that they were getting way more points. The value in terms of reward did not change but they were all excited because it was different.

where to begin......"whoop there it is","boom baby","we rock","we bad", "you know it", "yuppppp" more to come....it seems like we think of something better ever so often.

These come from other posts on other parts of the forum,

"...changing them for the season. In October, we had "Spooky" / "Boohoo" and I even changed the frown face to one of a ghost. I'm looking for some November ideas. I have a new frownie of an Indian so I was thinking of something Thanksgiving related. I had thought about Gobble Gobble, but I'd like to have one for both and - any thoughts?"

"November you can use something along the lines of "thankful" and "not thankful", a stuffed turkey vs. a skinny turkey, or happy turkey vs. sad turkey."

If you did a turkey, could you add feathers to it? Instead of a tally, their turkey gets a feather if they earn a point...your turkey gets a feather if you earn a point. I like the gobble, gobble for them to say if they get a point, and I'm trying to come up with something if you get a point. I may need the weekend to think on that one!

For the indian, you could have a pic of an indian and then a pic of a headdress because you're the chief. They can make a Tomahawk movement and say, "oh, oh, oooooh." In an indian chant sound, real quick. If you get a point, they can say, "Hail to the Chief!"

We are the Jackson Indians, so I have some fun games that have that theme like "Chiefs and Indians." We use multiplication flash cards and if they win the scoreboard, we play this game. Everyone gets to go outside and run. I have 3-5 students who are the chiefs. If they get tagged by a chief, they have to see the big chief (me), and answer a multiplication fact in order to go run around the indian village again.

I'll try to come up with something for the turkey and get back with you!

Hope this helps!

Allison,
If I am understanding your post, you are asking for a way to add vocabulary building into the scoreboard response, not just fun or crazy responses. This week, my first graders have been studying inventors, specifically Wilbur and Orville Wright. We used "How clever!" for our smilies, and "Failure to launch!" for our frownies. Both responses were directly linked to our unit of study, and you can bet my students know what "clever" means! We also talked about the many failures that inventors experience, and how important it is to get back up and try again. Perfect for motivation!!!
I have also used "Radiant" and "Dismal". Does this help? Let me know if this is the direction you are thinking, and I can help you brainstorm for some more ideas.

That IS what I am thinking Deb. Adding different words to help them learn the meaning of vocabulary they aren't used to hearing. I've been saying "give me a glorious oh yea!" and " sorrowful moan" and they get it. I would love brainstorming help. I love your ideas of using your curriculum focus too. Radiant and dismal are definitely keepers too. I work in a very vocabulary poor rural area and adding useful vocabulary for students to learn is always a goal. So anymore you can throw my way will be helpful. Thanks so much.

OH!!!! I love that idea Deb!

Some thoughts...
Energetic oh yeah!
Animated oh yeah!
Dynamic oh yeah!
Immense oh yeah!
Tremendous oh yeah!

A tearful groan
A distressing moan
A broakenhearted moan
A despondent groan

wow! I LOVE that RICH vocabulary.....makes what I am going to say next seem feeble....but......
I have a friend who for December would have students give a mighty "ho~ho~ho" (while holding their jolly bellies of course), and a disappointed "NO TOYS!" for the mighty groan.
But HEY! there's two more vocabulary words...... jolly and disappointed. hahahaha!
