TOPIC: New to Teaching

New to Teaching 2 years, 1 month ago #3147

I am a first year teacher this year. I teach first grade in Evansville, IN. I have been struggling with all of the typical first year teaching problems especially with classroom management. I am being moved to third grade and am interested in using this next year. Are there any suggestions on how to use this effectively in third grade? What do I need to do to prepare for the upcoming year? Thanks for any help.

Hello! First of all, go to the download section and download the ebook on Teaching Challenging Students. Read through it all. Then, you just DO it! It is the most absolutely amazing way of teaching! It will take care of your management issues while teaching your kids in a way that they retain WAY more than just the 'normal' teaching methods. The basic theory is that if you can teach something to someone, you understand it. In WBT, you teach your students in small spurts, then you have them turn to their neighbor and 'teach' them the same thing you just taught. Repetition is the key! Try it one day...you'll never go back! Please come back with your questions once you have read through the ebook!

Another way to learn this great system is to watch all of the videos, even if they aren't your grade level. Watch them, and then watch them again because this is the way to learn how to do it. Have fun and keep it up.

It would even be worth trying out some of the things for the rest of this year. Just try the "Class, Yes", and the scoreboard game. Those are in the "first steps" pull down at the top of this page.

Another way to get started is to get on board with a friend. Talk with either your old team, or soon to be new team, about WBT...Watch a video or two with them. Then talk it out. This is the way I got started. My teaching partner brought it to me one day during our conference period and said, "Hey...check this out"...we watched it together and the rest , as they say, is history. It also helps when it is time to move past the first steps of WBT, to talk it out with a partner or out here on the forum.

Good Luck!
