I teach 11th grade math to students who struggle with algebra and geometry. They've never passed our state TAKS exam. This is only my 4th year teaching.

I've pinpointed what I think are their biggest stumbling blocks:
1. fractions
2. operations with negative numbers
3. solving any algebraic equation
4. getting equations into point-slope form
5. remembering all the different algebraic and geometric concepts for the exam
6. knowing how to start the problem (this one's linked to #5)

I've got some hands-on lessons/labs to handle #1 thru #4.
I think that whole brain teaching can help me with #5 and #6. I'm hoping if they say it to each other ("talk") it will help reinforce the concepts in their own head.

I'm really really nervous about trying this out with high schoolers. But, I know when I pull it off I'll have so much better classroom management in terms of the excessive talking.

Hi again,
I posted a note in one of the other categories to you, but I wanted to add that I think you will be surprised how well high school students respond. You just need to make sure you present it as a fun new way of learning. Keep the pace quick and the energy level high. You might say something like, "In my class you are going to learn math in a way you have never learned before. That is because math is supposed to be fun and we are going to have fun doing math. I'm going to teach you some ways to learn that might seem silly at times, but it's okay to be a bit silly as long a we're learning math!" I have also found it helpful to explain WHY I'm teaching using gestures and "Teach-Okay." I have one of those posters in my class that says something like you learn 40% of what you hear, 50% of what you see, .... something else...., but 100% of what you DO. Sometimes high school kids like to know WHY they have to do certain elements of Whole Brain Teaching. I think you will find that using gestures will DEFINITELY help your kids remember concepts! The hardest part is sometimes thinking of good gestures. That is where this forum can be especially helpful. Any way, good luck and keep posting!

Thanks Kristen! I like the intro script you put in there for me. I'll practice that. Will keep you posted.
Take care.
