Hello Jay
I have seen Reksted's power pics and would like to start using them myself. I'm just not sure of the format. I know the front side is a picture, but what info do you put on the back side?
I want to start building my pics library over the summer and continue adding to it as the year goes on, how do you decide what to create a pic for? How many pics. do you introduce in a given lesson?
I will begin teaching about living things and their cells, then, mitosis, chromosomes, organs, systems, organisms. Any help you may give is appreciated.
Thanks Jason Mills
In a nutshell:
1. Turn your standard or vocabulary into a question...example: systems: What are systems?
2. What is the answer to your questions...think kids terms. This is the verbal part of the brain that they teach each other.
3. Come up with an icon or picture that matches the term (google images or microsoft) visual part of the brain
4. Come up with a gesture that coincides with both the verbal and visual. motion part of the brain
5. As for the the things on the back of the card: I put the question, answer, gesture, and state standard (for my administrator if they ask).
I like to use my pix to frontload lessons. Go over all of the vocab and pictures before they actually read the chapter, but there are many ways to put it into practice. I wouldn't go more than five pictures at a time, but middle school kids might be able to handle more.
Let me know if this cleared or muddied the water.
Jay
