HI!

I will be greeting my students for the first time in one week. I have been reading everything on this site plus watching the videos. I have a question about the order in which to introduce WBT, where there are the 5 rules plus the Class/yes, Teach/Ok etc.. and since I teach ESL, normally there is soem sort of language review/usage. In which order do you start?

I'm assuming the class/yes, teach/ok which I am planning on doing in Eng. not their native language. (I will have seventh and eighth graders who are in years 2 and 3 in English study.) But then, should I introduce the rules over several days in order to do some work in the language each class? I see them 3 times a week for 50 min. I know that establishing the rules and procedures is very important those first days but so is diving into the foreign language.

What are your suggestions? Thank you!!

Hey carolq - I don't teach ESL, but I do have 7th graders. I started the first days with the rules and class/yes, I introduced the scoreboard, but they lost because they could not move fast enough and had to do their class survey for homework. The second day I introduced Teach/Ok, Mighty Groan/Mighty Oh yeah, and other small things... I hope that helps!

Ok I see now how you progress through everything. In fact, introducing the procedures and rules can take a few days, but I'm sure that getting them 'tuned in' is worth this time spent!

I have kids that are mostly considered 'failures' by themselves and teachers. They have lost their motivation, have no parental support and have a mission to disrupt the classroom. They are also very right brained. I am really looking forward to implementing WBT in my classes. I hope that I get in enough practice before 'showtime'!

Thanks!

This is so hilarious! I just had to share on this whole ESL topic. I taught newcomer 5th and 6th grade ESL students for three years, and I truly loved it. Now I'm a "regular" teacher, but I have two newcomer students in one of my classes. I have them set up with some bilingual buddies. Of course, I am teaching in English, and all WBT procedures are done in English. One of the buddies suggested to me just yesterday to do some of the procedures in Spanish, and thought it was SO COOL!
