I teach EFL in a public school in the Amazon Region of Brazil. I have 3 classes in which I would like (need ) to start Industrial Strength WBT. I would like suggestions as to how to start. The instruction and example in the eBook assume that you teach the class everyday. I need suggestions about how to implement it in a situation where I only have class with them once a week. I have been using WBT since the beginning of the school year (we start in February), but it isn't having much effect in three of my classes (I have 10). They are imune to punishment and I haven't yet found something that motivates them except for letting out 1 minute early for every point they are ahead of me.
If I wait till "the following day" as the eBook suggests it would take me three weeks to fully start using Industrial Strength. any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks in advance and God bless you all!

Hello--

Hmmmm...I'm not sure what 'EFL' is but....

--Have you asked them for suggestions that would motivate them? I will 'bank' the time and allow them to use the time for a few minutes or even a whole period of free time.
--You could use it for seating arrangement...let them choose depending on scoreboard score.

Good Luck!

I vote to sit down with them and ask them about their interest. I found that a lot of my students were interested in the brain and how it worked. When my class beats me, we will do a 5 minute activity with a topic of interest. This has helped me to expose real life material to my students and rewarding them for being awesome. I have started to do this more and more because it is getting towards the end of the year.

Make it Happen

Thank you for your replies and your suggestions.

Jason EFL is English as a Foreign Language. (I live in the Amazon region of Brazil.)

I use WBT, including the scoreboard, in all of my classes, but 3 of them weren't responding well to the incentives and especially to the penalties, and I realized I needed to try Industrial Strength WBT.
I was able to start Industrial Strength in 2 of the classes and have had elections in a third. I wasn't able to get up the suspense that is suggested in the ebook, but was amazed at the reaction in one of the classes when I praised some of the leaders and gave the class points. It was immediate attention all eyes up front! Something I have rarely been able to get in that class.

In general they like working in pairs and a topic that almost everyone is interested in is soccer, especially with the city school soccer and volleyball tournaments coming up and World Cup Soccer coming to Brazil in 2014. They are also getting hooked on Mind Soccer - yeah!

Thanks again!
Please keep the suggestions coming.
