TOPIC: Adding with a WOO!

Adding with a WOO! 2 years, 6 months ago #2735

Okay...so here is something new I am trying out this year....
We have always had an 11 finger WOO (in case you haven't heard of it, that's a ten finger WOO, then you do a one finger WOOP after)
Soooo...this year I am going higher and using it for adding the teens.
For example, I will say "Let's give our friends a 12 finger WOO, twelve is....."
and the kids say "10 plus 2!"
We are all the way up to 15. Of course I had to do a lot of modeling where I would say "Let's give a 12 finger WOO. Twelve is 10 plus two!". But now they are able to say it and figure it out up to 15. WE still incorporate the festive WOOS, just going up to 15. (For example, for October, we did a spooky 10 finger BOO! and for November were doing a 10 finger Gobble. Now we just add a few more boos and gobbles!)
We'll see what this looks like at the end of the year and where it takes us!

Thanks Heather! We sure miss you down here......when are you coming back down here to bring back your WBT expertise?

I wonder if we could incorporate that in the upper grades with multiplication, by saying something like, "Give him a 24-finger woo!-- 24 is..." and they chime in, "6 x 4!" or whatever....and then use your "Woop!" as a multiplier. So they hold up 6 fingers, and "Woop!" it 4 times as they flash those six fingers....

Could be fun...I want to try it with my GATE 3rd and 4th graders. They have a ball with WBT.

I wonder how it would work with Woos and multiplication. There would have to be a way to determine which factors you want them to say. Definitely something to think out and try to figure out how to do.

Have you tried using multiplication facts as a substitute for Class/Yes? You say the factors (8x5) and they say the product (40). Maybe pick a "Factor of the Week" and use that as an attention getter.

Please let us know if you figure out a way to use multiplication with the Woos. Sounds like it could be a great way to incorporate spiral review without using a single second of extra time (something we can all use more of) or interfering with the teaching.

Very creative way to use the 10 finger whoo! One of the things we are trying this year is using the whoo for fractions. When the teachers tells the class to give a student a ___ finger whoo, that number represents the numerator. The student then responds with a random number to serve as a denominator. The class then has to quickly simplify the fraction if possible. For example, if we give a student a 4 finger whoo and he/she says "12" then the teacher would say, "That's simply ____" and the class would say "1/3". If the fraction is already in the simplest form, 5/13, when the teacher says, "That's simply _____", the class would say, "simple" in a fun way.

Jackie! I think that sounds awesome!
When I did third grade I never did multiplication with the woo's, however I did do it when we were transitioning. For example, I might say something like:

"Class! (they say Yes) Hands up hands up (they repeat and put hands up) I am looking for tables that are ready, I will know you are ready when your math books are put away and your silent reading books are out. We will do this by 3's. You may go!"
after I would say GO! They would chant the multiples of 3 (3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36!) ***we did have a tune to this** I would hold up my fingers each time they went through all the multiples. By the time I had a third finger up in the air they needed to have the requested item pulled out and then their hands and eyes.

This helped to get the multiples down. But I never tried it with the woo's which would be good for immediate recall of basic multiplication facts. I think it sounds promising!!!

I love the idea of using woo for multiplication. I've used it with class/yes, but never with woo. I can see it being another fun way to practice the facts. I used songs with my multiplication facts like Andrea, so I could see combing the two. For example, Give that girl a 4 finger woo; students give the four finger woo and then chant or sing, my class always chants, because they hate hearing Mr. V sing, 4,8,12,16,20....(twinkle twinkle little star). As soon as the chant is done, the person who receives the woo can yell out any problem (4 times 8) and the rest of the class yells back 32 and then silence falls. It would be a great routine.

Sounds like fun! ARGH! I'm craving third grade again:) I'm even missing those times tables! Well--I guess I'm going to have to incorporate this in kinder. We'll see how far it goes! We already skip count 2's, 5's, and 10's...guess I can see if I can't push it a bit further:)!
