Hi, I am a veteran teacher who is excited about using WBT with my class. I have used some of these techniques before, but just stumbled on this site. Wow! I have a couple of questions, though.
1. When using the superspeed letters and numbers, do you just hand out the cards? When do you start this?
2. We have a Promethean Board (like a SmartBoard) in our room. I would love to be able to connect with other K teachers who also use a board.

Thanks so much for the help. Our school starts Aug. 2! Holly

Here are the rules:
1.Hand out the SuperSpeed item list (Letters & Phonics, 100 or 1000).
2.Match up pairs of weaker and stronger readers.
3.If you have an odd number of students, then one team will have three players.
4.Have players on each team decide if they are a 1 or a 2. The three player team will have two 1's.
5.Give the players time to review word (or letters) on the list.
6.Then, say something like the following, "I want each player to read alternate words as quickly as possible. So, if youre a 1, you'll begin and read word 1, then your partner will read word 2, then you'll read word 3, and so forth. The 1's on the three person team will take turns. I want you to read the words like lightening, super fast! I'll give you a minute. If one of you doesn't know a word, the other can say it."
7.Time the reading for a minute, and then say "Stop!" Ask the teams to draw a line on the page marking their personal record. Then, give them a chance to beat this record, but have the 2's go first. (Thus, both players must read all the words.)

It's important to not have it on a Interative board because you want each pair of students to have ownership over their list and mark where they stop at 1 minute. They are competing with themselves which makes the activity more meaningfull.
I guess you could do it whole group but I don't think you will get the same amount of success. My kids really like this game! I had 3 kindergarteners reading at a 24 DRA last year! I work at a Title 1 school that has 45% ELL students, so WBT really works! I love it and so do my students!!!

I do have a smart board file that has gestures for about 25 sight words that are great! I will attach them when I get to my school computer.

I use to have a promethean board at the last school I worked at. It is a great tool. You could utilize the timer and the picture function by downloading superspeed math and reading, take a picture of it, and post it on your board so kids can see it on the screen. Also, this would be a great way to teach kids how to score the game with their partner by using the stylus pen to make marks. You can pretend to be a student reading the answers and let a kid mark you wrong and tell you to go back, etc.
I'm jealous! Wish I still had one. Have fun!
