TOPIC: We've made it to teach, ok!

We've made it to teach, ok! 1 year, 7 months ago #4137

You all will be happy to hear that we have made progress and are now trying the teach-ok. It has it's frustrations too. My kids are used to mirror and want to repeat after me. So I need to use a ready, clap, teach (they say ok) then I have to use a little nudge to get especially the ESL kidos to talk, but even my challenge students with some baby steps are kinda of getting it.

I know practice, practice and more practice. But at least I can smile now, wooo

SO annette~ how is the Teach! Okay! going? One great way to get them started is the power pix. Have you tried those?

Andrea,

Teach/OK is getting there. I have trouble with them responding, then turning (full turn), and my more ESL learners talking. Is there more- probably

I agree with Andrea..the POWER PIX are a miracle!!!! Seriouisly...it is a visual cue for the kids to teach when their brains just go blank the minute you ask them to speak!!!! LOL!!! For some of mine it isn't that they don't know the material....it's just that the cat got their tongue!!! POWER PIX ROCK!!!

That's right, Farrah:)!

Also, Annette, the Power Pix give something for each partner to say and can transition easily into the Teach! Okay! with a switch. For example, you can have 1's be the Questioner and 2's be the answerer. So, for instance, the 1's might ask: "What is an author?" and then the 2's would answer "The author writes the words to a book, story or poem." Students would continue on through all the Power Pix taught to date. They keep running through what they've learned until you say "switch!".

See how adding in the Power Pix goes and let us know:)!

Andrea, a true test I'll try this today! We are getting better at teach/ok but they don't always mirror my clap, clap, teach/
S: clap, clap, ok- the students just want to say ok and turn.

Suggestions?

Hey Annette,

I just repeat it a couple of times until they remember to clap first and then say OK. The slower the better - gives all students reaction time. The more we do it the better it gets:)

Hi Annette,

I do clap clap, teach, and then I do the clap clap ok WITH them. I have been doing that for the whole first semester, and after getting back into the routine, will now see how they do on their own.

Hope that helps.

Hey annette!
I agree with Melissa~ I chose a clap pattern then say teach and then I do it with them so they can follow the pattern. The best part is that once they get used to it you can add anything and not do it with them. Better than that~ my kiddos are now answering questions that I ask in class by:
Standing up~ saying Class! (to get the students attention)
Then they get to choose mirrors or mirrors and words and they lead the students to mirror them in their answers (which by the way~ we don't have "Baby talk"~ we speak in "College talk" which is full sentences:)
I have students give a thumbs up or thumbs down in agreement or disagreement. If student is wrong "it's cool", if student is right, the [u]student[u] leads the class in their very own TEach! Okay! (students then teach the answers to their neighbor)> SO COOL!!!!! So in the beginning they are copying their dear teacher in doing TEach Okay! patterns, then they can get it on their own, and now THEY ARE LEADING THE CLASS IN ORIGINAL THINKING ANSWERS! Oh yah!!!
