TOPIC: Houghton Mifflin

Houghton Mifflin 1 year, 1 month ago #5300

Just wondering how many of you use HM. I find WBT fitting it nicely with WBT. Do you extend HM with any WBT?

Thanks!

Hi there!
Yes my school district currently uses HM. And I ABSOLUTELY use WBT with my HM instruction. That is the awesome thing about WBT~ this is your instructional delivery that can work with ANY curriculum that comes along.

Hi Andrea,
Any additional HM resources you may have up your sleeve? I am familiar with the Santa Maria Bonita School District's website (well former website) which had TONS of resources. I also use the Florida Center for Reading Research to come up with center activities.

We were able to get our kindergarten team to NOT use HM theme skills this year and only use quick checkouts (which still aren't THAT quick but give us more accurate and meaningful data than theme skills in grade K when they don't understand the concept of privacy folders. It was such a waste of instruction time and I'm so glad we don't do that anymore!

Do you teach full day or half day? Do you use the HM enhancements?

Reading is the BEST part of my day with WBT. =)

just reread my original message. I think I've mentioned - I have a six month old baby at home and my brain has gone to the birds since I had her! PLEASE excuse my silly mistakes.

HI Megan!
No worries! I DON'T have a 6 month old baby at home and my brain has gone to the birds:)

As far as HM is concerned~ our district no longer uses theme skills and we have our own benchmarks.

I also have downloaded stuff from Santa Maria Bonita~ they are great!!!

However~ I use the Biffytoons to teach the HFW. I just teach them in the order laid out by HM. Also~ instead of teaching just the 18 HM has us teach~ I teach 42 Biffytoons and my kids can read and spell them. SO much better!!!!

Materials for HM~ well not so much~ only because we only use HM to supplement our themes. We use their phonics, and the stories~ BUT we have moved stories around and created Units. We are a dual immersion school and are trained in GLAD and have found that teaching in Units helps our students immensely.

I now teach half day~ although for the last 6 years I have taught full day. The only reason I have gone to half day is to teach in our learning center in the afternoons.

And I agree: WBT makes everyday a great day:)!
