This year has been the first year where my students have been leaders and they now get up in front of the class, call the class with the Class! Yes!, do mirrors or mirrors and words, & then they teach their answers to the class using gestures. Once finished they end with the Teach! Okay! to have their friends teach the answers.
Pretty awesome, and then.......
Today we were in a "lull" and I needed to pull something out of that big back pocket so......
I had the students be my teacher! The class called me (in unison, they said Class! and I, of course, responded YES!) and they did mirrors and words for me and taught me an answer. Of course I did my best as a student learning this "new" material (*wink wink*). They LOVED it! I told them I may not have a job next year because they may be taking my job:)!!!!!!

Isn't this amazing Andrea...I really do love to sit back and watch them play "teacher" ... they just have no idea that this is perfect way for me to assess how well they know the material...because if they can teach it to me..then they know it

My kinders and first graders have had many opportunities to be class leaders. I also make them use the "because" clapper (yes we changed it because slapping just didn't feel right)when they choose the next leader:

I choose Sam, BECAUSE he is also fair to me in class (said Miguel).

Yup, it is a direct quote from one of my ESL students. I also just love when I have 2 and they have a little pow-wow in the front of the room (whisper, whisper, whisper) about how they are going to excuse the class to their seats. Oh such decisions!!

That sounds like a great idea having the entire class teach you! In China, they often use what they call "little teachers" to come to the front and explain (in a boring way) the lesson. I adapted that to let the little teachers use WBT to teach the class on their own. My first graders love being a little teacher. They argue about who gets to run the line at the beginning of every period allowing them to come into the room (WBT style). I am looking forward to having the whole class teach me!
On another note, we use the comma clapper when reading, and sometimes when speaking. We are just starting to use the because slapper. During parents day last week I taught a small workshop on using mirror, comma clapper, period beep, and question mark gesture. The parents loved it and thought it was a great break from their normal lectures. According to my students many of the parents are making them do it at home too.

Love those punctuation variations~ especially with the added sound effects!

RE: Students/teachers~ what I am always amazed is how much more the students respond to their peers. I am worried......I think they like their "new teachers" better than me. Hahah:)
