I am a 25 year teacher of K and 1st. today was our 1st day of school and I implemented some WBT components. I introduce class/yes, hands and eyes and the 5 rules. The kids quickly took to these concepts and we had a very pleasant first day. I wish I had had access to these ideas 25 years ago. In the upoming days I plan on using the scoreboard, teach/ok etc... Excited to see how it goes!

Thank you for the welcome. Today was even bettter! I introduced the scoreboard and teach/ok. I have a western themed room so I made my score board with a happy cowboy and a sad one. (sad face and happy face wearing a cowboy hat) We did Yee haw and Whoa! They loved it and responded so well! They learned their partners and space to sit on the carpet well too. We even made a racoon puppet to go with the story "The Kissing Hand" and had the puppets recite our class rules. I am truly enjoying this and so are my kinders!

It is suggested to teach a rule a day for the first week for K. But you did it all on the first day, How did that work out for your class? Doing all and reinforcing all from the beginning seems like the way to go, because you can refer back to a rule immediately when it is broken.

Golden, k kids soak this up and the rules, class yes, hand and eyes and the scoreboard are what I worked on first and hit hardest. Remember some of these kids are coming from NO structure.

Hi Annette, I am wondering if there is a separate set of rules for kdg--- worried that rule 4 is too vague for Kinders.

Thanks Annette. I have all those things in place for Monday. Half my class does not speak a lick of English so it will be interesting and useful with those gestures. and I plan on using examples to represent making smart choices as the days progress. "Jose, you are following rule number #4, you just made a smart choice and took a different crayon..." Things like that. Less talking, more learning by example

Theresa...no not seperate rules for kdg. Believe me they get 1-4 and especially 5 no problems. In regards to rule 4 I ask "was that a smart choice to.......or was that a foolish choice". If they are very immature you could say is that a big girl/boy choice or ...when we come to school we make grown up choices that keep your dear teacher happy:-)

Just watched andrea's video and heard different rules---have you tried those?

Theresa, Deb a WBT expert shared that she starts super speed as a whole group activity. I tried this too and it works great. Be careful of that "pumped'" feeling I had up and really down days as I got used to W B t keeping the daily report card and a solid reminder that it is your behavior that will shape your class, will let you save that hanky for tears of JOY!

Yes...the daily report card...Is there a template for that? I want to help the parents understand. I realize that some children will break rules and I want a consistent way to let the parents know how well their child is doing or if they need extra intervention.

I am in need of some JOY hankies!

Kinder is such an amazing group! I think the daily report card that Annette is referring to is found in the ebook Industrial Strength WBT! It is a report card for you and your class so that you , the teacher, can see from week to week how your kids are progressing with WBT. Not something you would show to parents. When first starting WBT it can become discouraging when your class isn't looking like the other "veteran" WBT teachers on the videos. This "report card" can help keep you encouraged as you can see the small improvements. Remember that the videos represent WBT teachers that have been doing it for a few years and practiced practiced practiced! You will get there..and with a forum full of amazing wibbiteers you will get there faster than most of us LOL!
