I just had my first year teacher observation done by the districts Teacher Induction Program and was told that my whole group scoreboard system was not appropriate for kinder. I have been using it since day one and my kids really respond well to it. The observer suggested I go to a pocket chart system with red yellow green cards. Problem is I have identified a child who has consistant behavior issues and I know that if I use this method he will always be on red and left out. Confused in New Mexico. Any ideas? Thanks.

I am a new teacher too! I have to use both methods because my school uses PBS as a school, but in my classroom I use the change colors (card) for individual behavior and the score board for group participation and on task during lessons. Hope this helps!

That helps alot. I was thinking about doing both but was not sure how that would work. How do you do it specifically. Thanks for responding I am a bit overwhelmed right now.

I have been using "change your color" for the student's behavior that is unacceptable. (For example I say rule #1 follow directions quickly. If students are still not following directions quickly and are talking etc. I repeat Rule #1 and all the students will yell "follow directions quickly". If a student is not following directions quickly I say it again. If the student still persists I tell him/her to change their color (They all start on green. If they change it is to yellow, orange (note goes home) and red (referral to office)). I have not gotten a red yet.

The scoreboard I use for participation and attention during whole group. If most of the group is paying attention I give a smiley. If most are not I give a frowny. I use this for a week and the students are paying attention more. Each week is something different: Treasure Box for all, lunch with teacher, 3 minutes to draw after writing. Etc...

I know it is a whirlwind during the day and I am feeling like I am always running behind, but I was told it should calm down after January!!! (I have something to look forward to)
