Hi everyone,

I am a veteran teacher who began using the WBT rules and procedures in November of 2010. I had a successful begavior management system in place. After attending a WBT workshop in our district earlier this week, I began implementing the scoreboard. My question is how do I know when to implement level two. How much time should I give the more challenging students to get on board before I move up a level to the practice cards? Also, I have a hard time ignoring off task behavior. I have been having students chant a rule if I see someone not participating appropriately or giving a frownie face. Suggestions please.

I am very excited to be learning such a worthwhile instructional program!

I learned to stretch out the entire scoreboard experience for as long as possible. So if you are just starting out with the scoreboard, at least give it a month, if you can, before going to the next level. The class I had last year was extremely challenging--the reason I was introduced to WBT! I would have had to go through the levels fairly quickly. However, this year, my class is pretty tame with just a few who demand more attention. For the most part, the scoreboard works still w/o even using the cards, and we are almost halfway through the year! I actually have found the Bulls Eye game really works for the few students who are more high maintenence. You have to gauge your class before moving on to the next level. You might not even need to use all the levels....
Hope this helps! Sounds like you are off to a terrific start!

Hello there,

First there is no time frame as to when to introduce the levels..just the mantra "ITS A LONG YEAR!"

That being said...you have to look at the levels as tools in your back pocket. If you run out of tools too soon then where do you go? So stretching the scoreboard out is the most appropriate path. Generally the scoreboard should do the trick. If you have done the scoreboard and used the reward/practices appropriately and consistently...you should get about 80% of your class on board and following your rules. I would give it at least 2 months...if not 3!!! But that is me. Again there is no set time frame. For me this year my scoreboard lasted alone for 3.5 months and then I introduced the practice cards. I only recently..right before winter break...introduced the green cards for an individual student...but they moved so even that isn't being used anymore! Just remember that there is not set time line...it's a long year...and it's your classroom! Truly the most important thing with any level is consistancy!!!
