TOPIC: Refresher on teaching sentence structure

Refresher on teaching sentence structure 9 months, 2 weeks ago #7334

This summer I went to a WBT conference and they showed a way of conveying capitals were to begin a sentence and punctuation at the end. I LOVED that! They also used an invisible white board to write on. Is there a video (because I am very visual) that I could watch as a refresher? I am implementing these tools this year!!

I don't know of a video on the website that shows that. They are very easy to implement though. The capital letter at the beginning of a sentence is just taking your hands, one on top of the other, and moving the hand on top up vertically while making a "wooop" type sound. The period is: point in the air with your finger at the end of the sentence also with a sound effect. The air white board is simply drawing a large rectangle in the air as you say zip, zip, zip. Then clean the bottom corner with a squeak sound. You are then ready to begin your lesson on the air white board.

There could be a video on YouTube somewhere that shows a teacher using these in a class, but I haven't seen it yet. (Something for us to think about when making WBT videos this upcoming year.)

Good luck to you!

Thanks! I was at school tonight talking with a colleague of mine and I think I remember all of the important parts. It just feels like I learned a TON of stuff at the conference and it scares me thinking that I might forget some integral part. I LOVE WBT!! There is just nothing like it and I don't want to miss or forget any TRICK! Thank you!!

I'd also like to suggest that you check out the Genius Ladder (on the model classroom document) and the WBT writing game for more really great writing lessons.

As far as capitalization and punctuation are concerned~ check out the Power Pix. The Power Pix provide a fabulous visual~ and they also have the 5 step lesson plan which includes the gestures you can use and how to teach the lesson step by step.

Yes, thank you! I absolutely could not remember what that was called. I intend to implement that into my classroom management this year.
