TOPIC: Social Skills - Accepting No (for an answer)

Social Skills - Accepting No (for an answer) 10 months ago #6881

Accepting No for an Answer

1. Look at the Person - (point 2 fingers toward the eyes/face and then point
toward the person giving the No answer)
2. Say Okay - (Use the gesture for okay, pointer and thumb in a circle)

3. Don't argue - (pretend to zip lips)

Just as in with any skill that students are being taught, when teaching social skills remember practice is key, at neutral times. It is also better received by the students when social skills are taught and praised when they are not in trouble. Have fun with the practices, offer high fives and reinforcing statements!

Another little tidbit, feel free to reinforce using the WBT Happy/Saddy Scoreboard!

Hello Gate,

In a classroom with 30 students, this skill could be taught whole group using the WBT Teach/Okay method.
With most students, I don't anticipate having to using this social skill. But there are however Challenging students that are in our classes from time to time, some like to argue more than others or need to learn how to accept No and can do so with repeated practice of this skill.
That type of practice/ or correction would be done more on a 1:1 basis, or as practice with a small group of Guffers.

Did you have a specific concern regarding this skill? I hope this answers your question...The main intension or use of these skill are in a smaller setting, i.e. sped or 1:1 with challenging students.

This is a really great idea. I hadn't even thought of coming up with gestures for social skills. Duh. I'm going to start going through my social skills curriculum and making up gestures!
