HELP! I am using WBT with great success, but I have three boys, 6th grade, who will not read during independent reading time. They don't really talk back so the guff factor is not there. I use the scoreboard all the time, but it doesn't help much with their motivation.

Any suggestions?

Okay, let's start simple. Talk to each boy individually and ask him why he isn't reading ... offer to give them an easier book ... spend some time getting to know them ... it's easier to ignore your requests if they don't have a relationship with you ... next, when they aren't reading, stand silently by their chair, smile, tap their book, see if this prompt works ... if you are making no progress after a week, and you think the whole class is ready for it, go to the Practice Cards (see free download) ... incidentally, we are not big fans of silent reading. Try the Crazy Professor Reading Game (free download) and you'll probably solve all your problems quickly.
